After leaving Sega, and narrowly dodging a bullet of having his name on the disaster that was Sonic 2006, Yuji Naka established his own company, Prope. It was a chance for the veteran developer to create a range of original IP no longer shackled to a certain blue hedgehog. While the majority of the studio's output was rather simplistic casual games for mobile, the man behind Sonic, NiGHTS, and yes, even Billy Hatcher, hadn't given up on creating another colourful mascot action-platformer. This brings us to Rodea the Sky Soldier. Which is not really a platformer at all, since the magic comes from not touching the ground, but rather soaring and bounding between targets. You pilot the titular robot boy who's trying to recover his memories while defending the floating kingdom of Garuda from the dastardly mechanical Naga Empire. Sadly, Naka's vision never got a fair shake, with the Wii-developed version relegated to a 'bonus' disc if you were lucky to pick up the launch edition on Wii … [Read more...] about The Double-A Team: Rodea the Sky Soldier is an overlooked action game that deserves to take flight

First Animal Crossing: New Horizons Super Mario items are live, with more to come later
The Animal Crossing: New Horizons crossover with Super Mario is now live in the former game with the launch of the new 1.8 update. Once you've downloaded update 1.8 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons , which is available everywhere today on February 25, you'll have access to new Super Mario-themed items. When you check your mailbox after installing the update, you'll find the Mushroom Mural wallpaper waiting for you, which turns your house wall into a Mario course. However, the rest of the special Super Mario crossover items aren't going live for New Horizons players until next month on March 3. At this point, Nintendo will begin to gradually roll out the new items, which will continue to arrive all throughout the coming month. Contained within the crossover items are new outfits, resembling Mario, Luigi, and Peach, as well as special warp pipes. Once these pipes have been purchased, you can place two of them anywhere on your island for a quick shortcut between the two … [Read more...] about First Animal Crossing: New Horizons Super Mario items are live, with more to come later
Rodea The Sky Soldier review
Glimpses of Yuji Naka's outmoded genius can be seen in Rodea's barren skies, but a paucity and dissonance of ideas make this a failure. Ever play the game in which you must try to move from one side of a room to the other without touching the floor? The learning curve is low, but the risks are perilously high. Cracked lamps, bloody noses and scattered potpourri await the over-ambitious player, he who leaps from the arm of a sofa, over the baffled cat, only to put a clumsy foot through the coffee table. There's little grace involved, on those slow, wet childhood afternoons. Nevertheless, everyone involved believes, beforehand, that they'll move with enviable feline refinement, from mantelpiece, to lampshade to victory. Rodea: The Sky Soldier's development team clearly had a similar hopeful vision for this project, in which you play as a quick-footed robot boy, able to hover and glide through the air. As you tumble off walls and enemies, so you recharge the titular boy's … [Read more...] about Rodea The Sky Soldier review
Knack review
Sony has been saying for a while that it wants PlayStation 4 to take us back in time to a more innocent kind of gaming, but I didn't realise they meant it so literally until I played Knack, an old-fashioned platform brawler where you run around double-jumping and mashing buttons to punch goblins and robots until they flicker out of view. Almost completely linear and framed by a third-person camera over which you have no control, Knack is a series of fights that box you into small arenas until you kill all your enemies, at which point a forcefield is removed so you can continue. These fights are broken up by basic platform sections where you dodge through traps. There are ice and lava levels, along with forests where you punch owls and spiders, and in the end I was surprised the developers didn't just go the whole hog and throw in a mine cart ride. All of this is set up by a simple story about goblins attacking humans. Built out of prehistoric relics by an inventor everyone just … [Read more...] about Knack review
This Animal Crossing: New Horizons island is inspired by a Crash Bandicoot course
One Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has decided to theme their island around a Crash Bandicoot level. You can see the creation from u/thelordofgifts from the Animal Crossing subreddit just below, which was first posted earlier today on February 26. In the video, the user takes us for a brief tour around a section of their island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons , showing off various custom designs like TNT and Nitro crates. Forget Super Mario! I’m going for a Crash Bandicoot theme! from r/AnimalCrossing It's been met with an overwhelmingly positive response on the Animal Crossing subreddit. Underneath, a user suggests that, had they constructed this a little earlier in the year while it was still snowing, they could've had someone pushing a giant snow boulder behind them like they were running away from it. The time for Snowboys has sadly passed, however, as the snow has vanished from Animal Crossing islands around the world. Speaking of Crash, the bandicoot's … [Read more...] about This Animal Crossing: New Horizons island is inspired by a Crash Bandicoot course
