Black History Month For Black History month, we're looking at the impact of the Black Lives Matter protests on the games industry, and following up on pledges made by publishers and developers. Following the death of George Floyd and worldwide protests in solidarity with Black people last year, the games industry's lack of diversity came under increased scrutiny. The industry is still predominantly white—Ukie, the UK's primary video games industry body, conducted a member survey in 2020 that revealed that of the 10 percent of industry workers that identify as BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic), only 2 percent are black. A self-reported survey conducted by the International Game Developers Association in 2019 revealed the same figure. In the summer of 2020, several companies in the games industry raised money for charities fighting racial injustice and released statements in support of Black Americans or Black people in general. Over 1,000 developers donated their … [Read more...] about Has the games industry lived up to its Black Lives Matter promises?

In a year or so, I'm sure some critics will reappraise Cyberpunk 2077, highlighting its strengths without years of pent-up hype coloring their perspective—it'll get the Mass Effect Andromeda treatment, in other words. But I doubt that Cyberpunk 2077 will ever be looked at as a landmark open world RPG in the way The Witcher 3 is. It's just a decent sci-fi RPG that had a buggy launch. That's alright—an ambitious open world game didn't need to be a masterpiece to succeed in certain respects—but the muted response is remarkable when compared to the level of excitement that followed Cyberpunk 2077 from announcement to release. Many expected it to be groundbreaking, but just two months later we're more interested in talking about an Early Access Viking survival game . Meanwhile, one of the games that was supposed to be a huge deal in 2020, Halo Infinite , didn't even make it to release. It was jeered so thoroughly after its big gameplay reveal that it was delayed a year . For … [Read more...] about After Cyberpunk 2077, it’s harder than ever to guess which of these big games will meet expectations

I'm so enthusiastic about sword-fighting game Hellish Quart that I'd better start with a disclaimer before I get to gushing about it. This is an Early Access game, and it's pretty rough right now. The menus look like placeholders, the planned story campaign is absent, and the only way to play online multiplayer is streaming through Steam Remote Play Together or Parsec , which can be pretty crappy. That out of the way: Hellish Quart is so fun. I played it for hours last night, even though all I can do is spar AI fighters given that I don't have anyone around for local multiplayer. (I tried using Remote Play Together to fight Chris , but the lag bothered him. You may have better results depending on your internet connection.) You can watch two of my bouts with the AI in the video above, which is also on YouTube . How it works The goal of this 1v1 dueling game is, obviously, to slice or stab your opponent brutally enough to put them in the dirt, or at least to strike … [Read more...] about Hellish Quart is the most authentic sword-fighting game in years
