Grand Theft Auto 5 's loading times have been the butt of many a joke over the last seven years—even the beefiest of PCs will leave players twiddling their thumbs while that blonde lady throws a peace sign at her phone for the millionth time. The agonising wait has led one savvy player to delve into the game's code, and with some tweaking has managed to reduce the loading times by almost 70%. GitHub user tostercx has uploaded the fixed code , though they do warn that it's more of a proof of concept and not intended for casual use. They were also kind enough to provide a breakdown of the entire process . The lengthy loading times—tostercx experienced a six minute wait for GTA Online to boot up—are, in part, attributed to some terribly optimised code and a 10MB JSON file containing 63,000 item entries. Every time an item is found, the check then runs again… and again. tostercx estimated that this leads to around 1,984,531,500 checks. This, along with the fact the game was … [Read more...] about Someone has figured out how to reduce GTA Online’s load times by almost 70%

Red Dead Online needs an in-game gold rush if it wants to bring new players to the frontier in 2021
From Oregon Trail emigrants to the infamous Forty-Niners, Expansion era America saw hundreds of thousands head westward in search of fortune. Their pilgrimage across miles of open country wasn't undertaken just for the adventure of it, after all, but for the promise of more – more money and more opportunity. Rockstar, by now an expert in Wild West history, surely knows this, yet Red Dead Online still struggles to live up to that pioneer expectation of great reward for those who seek it. Anyone who originally jumped into Red Dead Online back at launch will be well aware of the online sandbox's stingy, heavily monetised game economy, and while Rockstar has done a lot to alleviate some of that tension over the last two years, its efforts still aren't enough to motivate continued play in those outside of the diehard community. That's a shame because there's much to love about Red Dead Online, but its economy continues to get in the way of discovering its best qualities. Given how … [Read more...] about Red Dead Online needs an in-game gold rush if it wants to bring new players to the frontier in 2021
GTA Online player explains how they cut load times down by 70%
A Grand Theft Auto player has cut down GTA Online's loading times by 70%, and they've explained how they achieved it in great detail. Over on Nee.lv , user T0ST explains that they recently went to boot up GTA Online on their PC, and they were shocked to find that it was just as slow as when it came out over seven years ago. The user started delving into why the loading times could be so slow, and they dug up a lot of information. The first issue T0ST outlines is a "bottleneck," in which the game uses a whole load of CPU power without really drawing from anywhere else on the system while the game boots up. They then discover that GTA Online is trying to read a specific kind of file, named JSON, but that its tool used to parse those files is "poorly built." Finally, there's an incredibly slow item de-duplication routine when booting up GTA Online, which checks over all of the thousands of in-game items one-by-one as the game boots up. All these factors combined means it … [Read more...] about GTA Online player explains how they cut load times down by 70%
An Elden Ring Trailer Has Appeared Online, And It’s Old And Blurry
An old, blurry, short, shaky-cam trailer for the From Software game Elden Ring has been posted on social media. Despite its poor quality and the fact that it's old, the trailer is generating a lot of buzz because From Software has stayed so quiet on the project since it was announced. "I can only imagine what drives you to seek the Elden Ring," says the narrating voice in the trailer. "I suppose you can't be talked into turning back. Very well then!" Reporter Jeff Grubb said on Twitter that the video dates back to 2020. Separately, VGC reported that development on Elden Ring has been "significantly hampered" by COVID-19. One source told VGC that Elden Ring is unlikely to release in 2021. Reporter Jason Schreier said Elden Ring has already been delayed multiple times and that the game will be shown off "relatively soon." Recently, Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg confirmed that Elden Ring will not be shown during an upcoming Xbox event. #EldenRing … [Read more...] about An Elden Ring Trailer Has Appeared Online, And It’s Old And Blurry
E3 2021 live event cancelled, LA city says
E3 2021's live event has been cancelled, according to paperwork filed by the Board of Los Angeles Convention and Tourism. Last month, we heard that E3's organiser the Electonic Software Association (ESA) had plans for a digital-focused show , though a live or hybrid event had not been ruled out. Now, documentation dug up by ResetEra (thanks, Twinfinite ) lists the show as a "cancelled live event", though with a potential license to return in 2022 and 2023. The show's production team may use E3's home at the Los Angeles Convention Centre and its next-door LA Live area for broadcast, the document concludes. But it now seems clear: do not expect to see anyone walking through the LACC's doors again this year. E3 was last held in 2019, after last year's event was called off in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the disruption it brought. Publishers were left to organise their own digital events online, and reveal events for companies such as PlayStation and Xbox … [Read more...] about E3 2021 live event cancelled, LA city says
