The first Halo Infinite beta could be coming relatively soon, according to a new teaser from developer 343 Industries. In a recent blog post , which also touches on plans for Halo Infinite cross-play support and the advanced features available on PC , live producer Sam Hanshaw discussed 343's goals for external playtesting on the next Halo. "We’ve been conducting external flights and playtesting with a very small external group representing a variety of backgrounds," Hanshaw said. "Getting to see folks outside the company experience the game for the first time is a thrill. The feedback we’ve been getting has been heartening in many areas, and impactful in others. The NPD Group has released its report for the first quarter of 2021, showing how well the US video game industry performed in the January-March period. In short, the US games market is thriving right now due in part to the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and the continued effect the pandemic has had on players' buying and playing habits. Total spending on gaming in the US during the quarter was $14.92 billion, which was up 30% compared to the same period last year when the pandemic was first taking hold in a big way. Categories such as digital console and PC games, as well as mobile, subscription, hardware, and accessories, all posted gains in the first quarter of 2021. Total spending on games rose by 25% to $12.8 billion. Hardware and accessories sales jumped by 81% and 42%, respectively. The Epic versus Apple trial keeps on giving: this time we know how much Epic paid on a per title basis for the free games released during the first nine months of the Epic Games Store's life. A document spotted and tweeted by GameDiscoverCo founder Simon Carless lists all the free games released on the Epic Games Store in the nine months to September 2019 - and how much Epic paid for each of them. The list tells us, for example, Epic paid $1.4m to get Subnautica as a free game. Team Meat's wonderful Super Meat Boy, on the other hand, cost just $50,000. Elsewhere, Funcom's Mutant Year Zero cost a cool $1m, whereas the brilliant Fez cost $75,000. It's not just indie games. Epic paid Warner Bros. $1.5m for Batman Arkham to go free on the Epic Games Store. Ubisoft got a paltry $63,000 for For Honor, though. Overall, Epic spent nearly $12m on nabbing 38 games to release for free in the first nine months of the Epic Games Store's life. The people behind Gamescom have ditched plans for a hybrid event and announced its 2021 show will be digital only. Gamescom will now be online and free for all, the German Games Industry Association announced. "This decision was made after extensive discussions with partners and exhibitors," Gamescom said. "Thus, the organisers take into account the current situation, in which too many companies are unable to participate in physical events this year due to the still difficult development. In this way, they also meet the partners' strong need for planning security." Gamescom will host its Opening Night Live event with Geoff Keighley on the evening of 25th August. It's a free online stream. Gamescom then runs to the evening of 27th August.
