Bandai Namco has finally dropped a release date for action RPG Scarlet Nexus, arriving on Steam June 24th, 2021. First announced a while back, Scarlet Nexus didn't have that much detail around it until recently, and it's actually looking pretty intriguing. Players will experience the story from one of two perspectives, psychics Yuito or Kasane, who are fighting terrifying psychic monsters known as Others who "descend from the sky with a hunger for human brains." The design of the monsters is weird and compelling, as the Others' forms are amalgamations of different objects and human parts. One's got a valve wheel for a face and a tree head. Another's got a big arm made out of smaller arms. The combo-driven combat is about psychokinetic powers: Lifting, breaking, and throwing pieces of the environment around to crush monsters. There are also companion characters with a variety of powers, like Kyoka who has the ability to make duplicates of herself. Scarlet Nexus will also have … [Read more...] about It’s psychics versus monsters in action RPG Scarlet Nexus, coming in June

Move over, Discord: FroggieChat is my new messenger of choice
Forget Slack, Discord, or (heaven forbid) Skype. It's time we all moved over to FroggieChat, a free throwback to the best chat client of all—the Nintendo DS's built-in Pictochat. A "faithful remake" of Pictochat for Windows and Android, FroggieChat is developer StupidPlusPlus' nostalgic gut punch for anyone who grew up with the original Nintendo DS. Painstakingly recreating the look and feel of that delightful little client, the dev has added a few new features—from extra drawing colours to a "suggestion" button for generating drawing prompts. FroggieChat may intentionally only work over local wifi networks—a deliberate decision, considering the original Pictochat's limitations. But with a theoretical limit of 65535 members per chat room and the magic of virtual networks, I reckon some clever folks out there could set up a viable replacement to conventional chat apps. FroggieChat is available for free over on Itch , though a $1 "Deluxe" edition will grant you extra drawing … [Read more...] about Move over, Discord: FroggieChat is my new messenger of choice
Have you tried… playing the best mixtape of 8-Bit action platformers in Cyber Shadow?
If you're old enough to have been there, or young and full of investigative vigor, screenshots of Cyber Shadow will give you pause, am I looking at a game released in 2021, or am I looking at the hottest rental from Blockbuster in 1991? Developer Mechanical Head Studios have pulled from the greatest releases of the 8-Bit action platformer genre; a bit of Mega Man, some Battletoads, and the clearest voices are Ninja Gaiden and Shadow of The Ninja. This is not the first authentic recreation of the genre, in recent years we've been treated to Sabotage Studio's The Messenger, Thomas Happ's Axiom Verge, and Yacht Club's Shovel Knight have all recreated the experience with joyful accuracy. Serious swag (blades) Despite all the imposed limitations of an authentic experience, playing Cyber Shadow still manages to feel like a game from 2021; the action is tight and immediate, with inventive and varied encounters. We're blessed with a handful of modern quality of life improvements, … [Read more...] about Have you tried… playing the best mixtape of 8-Bit action platformers in Cyber Shadow?

This game about airports made me weirdly emotional
I'm the guy who turns up for flights with hours to spare. Not because I'm scared I'll miss the plane, but because I love hanging out in airports. It's like taking a break from life. An abstract space stretched between two realities. Nothing to do but eat, drink, relax, buy shit you don't need, watch the world go by, and maybe catch up on some podcasts. So when I heard about Interminal, a game about wandering aimlessly around an airport, I had to play it. Interminal was developed by Ivan Notaroš and Ferran Bertomeu for PROCJAM, "a laid back and relaxed jam about making things that make things." In it you explore an endless airport terminal filled with procedurally generated duty free stands. The randomised brands—with names like Practicaralle, Fousol, Fasciosphere, and Natumisme—are absurd, but could easily be real high-end perfumes. And they never end. This forever terminal is infinite, and the neatly arranged stands of dainty toiletries with silly names never stop coming. One … [Read more...] about This game about airports made me weirdly emotional
