Video game publishers are always looking for more ways to get players to spend more money and spend money often. One of the latest trends is offering early play time, which companies like Ubisoft, 2K, and Electronic Arts have successfully used as an incentive. Using those extra few days of early play can help sell more expensive versions of a game or convince someone to sign-up for a subscription service. It can also gives publishers a built-in hype machine, with thousands of players online, posting glowing video commentary, and creating buzz for the wide release. That’s presumably what EA hoped would happen with Anthem: critical acclaim, glowing videos, and an electric atmosphere building for an entire week. BioWare’s latest was officially released on Friday, Feb. 22, but the full game was available for some players on PC and Xbox a full week earlier. Sometimes though, features that are supposed to make games more attractive can have the opposite effect. It all began with … [Read more...] about Did Anthem’s early access week do more harm than good?

Koei Tecmo revealed a teaser website for its next game last week. The internet quickly entered a tizzy as the site’s only text translated to “the fated battle begins.” That game, it turns out, is a new horse racing game. Winning Post 9 is the game in question, and it is coming to PS4, Switch, and PC in March 2019. The game is only for Japan, as have nearly all of its predecessors. Last week’s teaser site had little to no information, only a fiery background, the aforementioned text, and a December 6 date. That date coincides with this year’s Game Awards, which brought speculation that Koei Tecmo was teasing something like Dynasty Warriors. For those excited about Winning Post 9, it looks to be adding a lot to the series. Ryokutya2089 has a rundown of information on the game. It will retail for 8,800 yen (roughly $78) and evolves the series’ racing scenes. Also new are bond commands, learned and honed through the bonding system between jockey and … [Read more...] about Last Week’s Koei Tecmo Teaser Was for a Horse Racing Game
DICE is my favorite show in gaming’s calendar year. It’s an intimate gathering of game industry executives, developers and innovators, with a strong emphasis on networking. For a reporter, it’s perfect. I get to buttonhole interesting people in hotel hallways. Often, they’re up for a drink and a chat, away from PR minders. Don’t get me wrong. I like GDC and its ethos of sharing. E3 is a spectacle I’d hate to miss. There’s much to admire about PAX, most especially its spirit of mutual passion for gaming. But DICE is my thing. I’m ready and excited to get into my car and make my annual trek to Las Vegas. I’m looking forward to this year’s speeches, workshops, roundtables, interviews and social events. DICE usually has the best speeches in the gaming calendar. In previous years, Gabe Newell (Valve), Bobby Kotick (Activision Blizzard), Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear games) and Todd Howard (Bethesda) have taken the stage. This … [Read more...] about What to expect at DICE this week
Deep Silver and Warhorse Studios’ upcoming action role-playing game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, is a historically accurate and realistic rendition of the medieval kingdom of Bohemia, an Imperial State of the Holy Roman Empire. But it seems Kingdom Come: Deliverance, like war torn Bohemia, has under gone some massive changes itself due to the fact that the game has a 23GB day one patch. This day one patch is, in fact, larger than some games. Capcom’s recent Monster Hunter World, for example, launched with a total file size of 16GB on the PlayStation 4. The patch does balance features, but it also adds a few new ones. Here is the general list of improvements for Kingdom Come: Deliverance patch 1.01: Addition of multiple new events to the open world Massive improvement in dialogue animations Gaining money and experience is rebalanced Weapon and armor stats are rebalanced General combat improvements Improved NPC reaction time Sound propagation adjusted Archery is now possible … [Read more...] about Kingdom Come Deliverance Day One Patch is Larger Than Some Games
