Facebook reveals snooping ‘Nearby Friends’ MAPS feature that lets people stalk your movements
FACEBOOK is testing a controversial new feature that lets your friends see where you are on a map, just days after the company revealed a privacy breach that let hackers access 50million user accounts. It's called "Nearby Friends", and is very similar to an existing feature on Snapchat called Snap Maps – which was widely criticised over privacy concerns. Nearby Friends has actually existed on Facebook since 2014, but in a much simpler form. You'd get a list of people who were near you, showing approximate distances and areas. But a new update being trialled by Facebook would show an actual map, highlighting the rough locations of your friends around the world. Not everyone will see the update (The Sun was unable to view it), suggesting that it's being tested by a small number of users. The feature was first spotted by Jane Wong, a computer engineer from Hong Kong. She posted a screenshot of the feature to Twitter, revealing a map view of San Francisco that detailed the location … [Read more...] about Facebook reveals snooping ‘Nearby Friends’ MAPS feature that lets people stalk your movements
Facebook DOUBLES the time it takes to delete your account to a whole month – after hack pushes users to quit app
FACEBOOK has more than doubled the amount of time it takes to delete your account. It means that you'll now have to wait an entire month before Facebook actually starts scrubbing your info from the site. The move comes just days after Facebook revealed a staggering cybersecurity blunder gave hackers access to at least 50million accounts. This hack let attackers view profiles, photos, videos, installed apps, birthdays, and even private messages. Potentially fearing a mass exodus from Facebook, the company has now extended the "grace period" for cancelling an account deletion from 14 days to 30 days. For context, Facebook offers two different types of account deletion – account deactivation and permanent account deletion. Deactivation is a sort of "soft" delete, and can be undone whenever you like. It's for people who want to take a break from the site, hiding all of your info – and restoring it whenever you log back in. But account deletion permanently removes all of your … [Read more...] about Facebook DOUBLES the time it takes to delete your account to a whole month – after hack pushes users to quit app

Facebook hackers got access to your Tinder, Spotify, Instagram, Messenger and Airbnb too
FACEBOOK'S latest hack attack doesn't just affect the social network – but loads of other sites too. If you use Facebook to log into other services – like Instagram or Tinder – then Facebook hack attackers may have stolen all of your profile info, photos, private messages and more. On Friday evening, Facebook revealed that hackers were given access to 50million accounts. This let them use your Facebook account "as if they were the account holder" – a shocking security gaffe. But because of the way the hack worked, it also gave attackers the same level of access to any accounts you use Facebook to log in with. So if you tied your Facebook to Messenger, Instagram, Spotify, Tinder and Airbnb, hackers will have been able to slip into those accounts too. It's all thanks to a major screw-up in Facebook's website code. When you log into websites like Facebook, you get given an access token. Access codes are like digital keys that remind the website – and other … [Read more...] about Facebook hackers got access to your Tinder, Spotify, Instagram, Messenger and Airbnb too
