Leading Black voices of Intel offer advice for future technologists

In celebration of Black History Month this year, we've been getting in touch with some of the brilliant minds from behind the scenes at Intel. Marcus Kennedy and Steven Callender both take active roles in initiatives that seek to bolster diversity and inclusion across the board, and have kindly provided some insights about their inspirations, passions and aspirations. So, whether you're an aspiring technologist, or simply interested to see how Intel's working with its employees to raise the standard, we bring you two success stories from the voices of Intel employees, who are here to talk you through their journeys within the world of technology. Fair warning, I was already tearing up after the first answers. Marcus Kennedy General Manager of Intel's Gaming Division & Co-chair of Intel's Black Leadership Council After graduating with an Industrial Engineering degree from Florida State University and a handful of internships, I went to work for Kraft Foods in … [Read more...] about Leading Black voices of Intel offer advice for future technologists

This new Minecraft Dungeons Arcade cabinet offers “a new experience”

Mojang has unveiled a new four-person arcade version of Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Dungeons Arcade. Created in partnership with Play Mechanix, the arcade offers nine levels, and each player only needs to focus on three specific buttons - Melee, Dodge, and Range - and instead of save files, players use physical cards earned in each session to "empower their character with weapons, pets, skins, and items". "While the arcade version still contains the familiar multiplayer, dungeon-crawling gameplay you know and (hopefully) love, it also offers a new take that is made available through fundamental differences between consumer games and arcade games," teased an update on the official Minecraft website . "If you take a step back, you can see the similarities between the two, but when you take a step into [a consumer] game, it’s like a waltz,” says Will Carlin, creative director at Play Mechanix. “An arcade game on the other hand is some kind of super break-dancing speed … [Read more...] about This new Minecraft Dungeons Arcade cabinet offers “a new experience”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla river raiding offers repetitive pirate fun

Interest in Viking video games has never been higher, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla may have just served up its most traditional slice yet. There are no ancient civilisations here in Valhalla's new river raids mode, no friendly Saxon alliances to settle. It's just you and a bunch of bastards bombing up English rivers on a boat. As it stands, it's pretty fun. I've spent about five hours raiding since the mode arrived in yesterday's 1.1.2 update - enough time to tick off its main objectives - and will probably dip back in again to unlock more of its lengthier cosmetic pursuits. It's not perfect - more on that in a bit - and for a mode about raiding it could do with some juicer ongoing incentives. But there is something to it - and there's signs Ubisoft will stick with it and hopefully build on it from here. How's it all work? Well, head to your Settlement and you'll find a new crew have pitched up on shore, lead by a piratical Viking named Vagn. He has a ship you can use and a crew … [Read more...] about Assassin’s Creed Valhalla river raiding offers repetitive pirate fun

6 things VR is really good at now

In 2013 I volunteered to play a game design student's project on an Oculus Rift DK1, a simple maze and a rollercoaster demo. They were just prototypes so it wasn't a spectacular first impression of virtual reality, but I kept thinking about it for years after, and in 2018, lacking a suitable PC, I invested in a PlayStation VR. I wish I'd jumped to PC VR sooner. PSVR's pricing was more accessible for a call centre worker, but it came with trade-offs—wires were everywhere, PlayStation Move controllers weren't great for VR, and on a sunny day the light-sensitive motion tracking simply didn't work. PSVR wasn't terrible, just limiting. When I bought an Oculus Rift S I finally had the VR experience I wanted. Hand movement was refined, my immersion wasn't broken by sunlight, and setup was much tidier. I've since bought an Oculus Quest 2, but that Rift S demonstrated what VR could achieve and how many improvements VR tech has made since 2016. Granted, some aspects of VR still have a … [Read more...] about 6 things VR is really good at now

Twisted Metal • Page 2

"There is a wholesale abandonment of track-based racing," says Jaffe, considering why they failed. "Unless you're dealing with real hardcore reality racing simulations, people just seem to be going, you know, 'I can get that and more in these games that are amalgams of a number of genres.' "Every genre is getting assimilated into experience versus genre [so] that the idea of genre-specific games – this is a fighter, this is a racer, this is a shooter – I really think, in the next generation beyond this one, it will continue to become what we'll one day consider relics of the past." Whatever Twisted Metal is, it's a blast. I try out three modes of increasing complexity: free-for-all Death Match in a suburban setting; Team Death Match in a dynamically changing arena of destruction; and, lastly, Nuke, Twisted Metal's take on capture the flag. The first offers a suitably freeform, riotous opportunity to get to grips with the various vehicle types and their firepower. Additionally, it … [Read more...] about Twisted Metal • Page 2
