The gamepad has reigned supreme for controlling video games for several decades. But a Sony patent application could change things up by letting you use a simple household object as a controller. In Sony's case, it seems to really want you to use a banana. Just don't let anyone eat your controller before a big game. In a filing spotted by GamesIndustry.biz , Sony said that it "would be desirable if a user could use an inexpensive, simple, and non-electronic device as a video game peripheral." Enter the banana. Presumably, you'd be able to use just about anything with this patent-pending system, as you'd be moving the "non-luminous" object based on the poses you're doing with it. One image also shows X and Triangle buttons mapped out on different parts of the peel. In addition to the banana--or two bananas--Sony mentions objects such as oranges, mugs, or pens. Should the banana actually be a viable option, assuming the technology actually releases, it wouldn't be the first … [Read more...] about PS5 Could Let You Use A Banana As Your Controller

Nintendo Switch Pro will reportedly have 720p OLED screen
Nintendo's widely-anticipated Switch Pro model will feature a seven-inch 720p OLED screen and output at up to 4K when connected to a TV. That's according to a Bloomberg report, which cites sources aware that Samsung will provide its screens and begin production on those from June. Nintendo's plan is to reveal the new Switch model this year with an eye to launch in time for the lucrative holiday season, the report concludes, though no firmer release window is given. The current Switch offers a 6.2 inch screen, while the Switch Lite's screen is 5.5 inches. Both are LCD rather than OLED, meaning this new model - if it launches as reported - will boast a larger and higher contrast display. The online response to news of a 720p screen has been mixed, but the gains from a 1080p resolution on a screen that size would likely not be as pronounced as some have suggested, while it would also decrease battery life and likely drive up the unit's overall price. Nintendo has kept mum … [Read more...] about Nintendo Switch Pro will reportedly have 720p OLED screen
AMD Ryzen 3000 CPUs get go-ahead for performance boosting Smart Access Memory
AMD has today made available Smart Access Memory (SAM) on Ryzen 3000 CPUs. The feature, which allows for more effective communication between CPU and GPU, had previously required both the latest Ryzen 5000-series CPU and RX 6000 GPU in order to function, but is now been transplanted to Zen 2 desktop chips. Smart Access Memory is a feature that uses a native specification of the PCIe specification, Resizable BAR, to allow for greater and more effective communication between CPU and GPU. It essentially opens up the entire graphics card memory to the CPU, as opposed to how it usually functions—divvying up small (roughly 256MB) chunks at a time. In order to enable Smart Access Memory, you'll now need: An AMD 500-series motherboard Ryzen 5000 or 3000 CPU RX 6000 graphics card That will also include the new AMD RX 6700 XT graphics card when its release date rolls around later this month on March 18. All of that gear will need to be updated to the latest versions of … [Read more...] about AMD Ryzen 3000 CPUs get go-ahead for performance boosting Smart Access Memory
Netflix Exec Thinks Exclusive Theatrical Release Windows Will Go Away
Netflix product chief Greg Peters, who also became the streaming service's chief operating officer in 2020, says the company is poised to help lead the charge for further eroding theatrical windows preceding streaming debuts for content. Speaking with Deadline , Peters predicted, "It's what consumers want. It's hard to buck that trend for too long and I think that's eventually where things go." In December when competitor Warner Bros. announced it intended to put its entire theatrical line-up onto streaming services such as HBO Max, production companies, directors, and actors were predictably not pleased . It was also not exactly a shock to learn that Warner was reportedly trying to offset that surprising move by offering bonuses to stars impacted by the move to streaming-only releases-- one report had Denzel Washington receiving $20 million plus a backend fee , for example. In an interview, veteran director Christopher Nolan summed his feelings up bluntly, … [Read more...] about Netflix Exec Thinks Exclusive Theatrical Release Windows Will Go Away
