Paper Mario Speedrunner Skips Straight To Credits With Help From Ocarina Of Time

A Paper Mario speedrunner named JCog has now beaten the game in less than an hour via a new strategy that requires the use of an entirely different game cartridge: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time . The runner managed this feat on only his second formal attempt, though he streamed for several hours beforehand practicing the strategy. JCog's time of 54:22 would be a new "any-percent" world record for the game. However, it's not likely to top the official Speedrun.com leaderboards anytime soon, though it may become its own category extension. That's because the strategy requires memory manipulation through the use of a Japanese Ocarina of Time cartridge, which is usually not allowed in vanilla speedruns. As JCog explains in a lengthy Pastebin , the runner uses a series of exploits across both games that allow you to execute save file names as code. These exploits were discovered and developed by several people in the Paper Mario speedrunning community, including Rain, … [Read more...] about Paper Mario Speedrunner Skips Straight To Credits With Help From Ocarina Of Time

Paper Mario speedrunner uses an Ocarina of Time glitch to set a new record

A new Paper Mario speedrun world record has been reached, and it's all thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Don't worry, it will make sense in a minute. Speedrunner JCog posted the new 54 minute and 22-second record video along with an explanation of what the hell is happening on Pastebin . Here's the basic setup: speedrunners recently discovered a glitch that would let them overwrite parts of Paper Mario's game code as it ran, enabling what the community calls arbitrary code execution or ACE. Unfortunately, accessing that glitch with just a copy of Paper Mario and your controller requires impossibly precise inputs. It turns out there's another way, thanks to a previously known Ocarina of Time glitch and the magic of the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak. Here's the top-level explanation from JCOG: "We're using ACE in OoT to write code to memory that we can reach with a glitch in Paper Mario after quickly swapping cartridges, and then that code lets us write more … [Read more...] about Paper Mario speedrunner uses an Ocarina of Time glitch to set a new record

Fans React To New Elden Ring Footage With Memes And Hype

Elden Ring fans have grown increasingly desperate for news of From Software's highly anticipated game, and a leak of what appears to be grainy footage of the game in action has triggered a torrent of memes. On the Elden Ring subreddit, which has become ground zero for the game's increasingly-desperate fans to express their displeasure at From Software's radio silence, the reaction has been divided between unrelenting hype and humorous memes. Wait a minute from Eldenring The Elden Ring subreddit has become increasingly meta in its sense of humor as the wait for the game has continued. For example, the above meme compares a low-definition screencap of a carriage from the newly revealed footage to the carriages from a photoshopped screenshot of Bloodborne Kart, a non-existent game that has become a meme unto itself in the community. Other top posts in the subreddit poke fun at the footage's highly questionable video quality. Another popular post compares a tree seen in … [Read more...] about Fans React To New Elden Ring Footage With Memes And Hype

It Takes Two preview: If only it came out three years ago maybe I wouldn’t have gotten divorced

"It's impossible to get tired of this game otherwise I'll give you a thousand bucks," Josef Fares proclaims in the middle of a presentation on It Takes Two. It's a one-way video call, so Hazelight's creative director can't see me raise my eyebrows at the statement, which is made before I get a chance to dive into the game for myself. But It Takes Two's core conceit is certainly interesting enough for such a statement to hold water: centered around Fares' love of romantic comedies, it's a co-op platformer about a couple headed towards divorce and the paths that lead to and away from it, with the narrative reflected in the shifting level design. "What the fuck, how many games are doing the rom-com genre?" Fares asks rhetorically. "We should have released it on Valentine's Day, that would have been perfect marketing. Damn, shit..." he trails off, cursing under his breath. Fares isn't wrong, as It Takes Two is firmly about love and relationships – it even forces you to create or manage … [Read more...] about It Takes Two preview: If only it came out three years ago maybe I wouldn’t have gotten divorced

Project Triangle Strategy demo is promising for those who loved Fire Emblem: Three Houses

As a longtime Fire Emblem fan, I can't help but be drawn to Project Triangle Strategy (lacklustre working title aside). After playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses to death back in 2019, I'm more than ready for a new strategy-based adventure and Square Enix's upcoming RPG seems to fit that bill perfectly. As the second game in Square Enix's HD-2D series, the delightful sprite style seen in Octopath Traveler makes a comeback, and brings to mind the old school vibes of classic strategy games that landed on the Game Boy Advance so many years ago, like Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. After seeing a brief glimpse of Project Triangle Strategy in the most recent Nintendo Direct , I was all too keen to jump right in and check it out for myself. I've since played through the demo a few times, and I've already found a lot to love about Square Enix's strategy RPG… but there are some aspects that give me a moment's pause. Still, whether you're a Fire Emblem … [Read more...] about Project Triangle Strategy demo is promising for those who loved Fire Emblem: Three Houses
