My perception of time has gone haywire over the last year, so I couldn't tell you if Crusader Kings 3 launched recently or a million years ago, but it does feel like it's been the right length of time for some DLC to make an appearance. There's even a placeholder Steam page for it. Paradox has been keeping schtum about what's hidden away inside 'Expansion Pass 1', but that's about to change. The developer will spill the beans on the first expansion and accompanying free update on March 13, during its Paradox Insider event. There are fewer obvious places for it to expand compared to Crusader Kings 2—it's a big lad—but that hasn't stopped me putting together an expansion list of demands wish list. So while we wait for the announcement, here's what I want from Crusader Kings 3 DLC. Knight life Knights are one of CK3's big new additions, beefing up warfare (and its stakes) with hard-as-nails warriors who also hang out at court. They're great, marrying two normally disparate … [Read more...] about What I want from Crusader Kings 3 DLC

The making of Bravely Default 2, a return to form built on demos, mistakes, and Octopath Traveler
While Bravely Second: End Layer continued the story of the original game, Bravely Default 2 is now hoping to continue the story of the franchise some six years later. The third (and slightly confusingly named) installment of the series will launch on Nintendo Switch this Friday, February 26, and producer Masashi Takahashi hopes to see it establish Bravely as a full-fat series home to independent but thematically connected stories and games. He and character designer Naoki Ikushima have also worked to marry the best parts of Bravely with lessons learned from Octopath Traveler, the last Switch JRPG that the two worked on, and player feedback has shaped that process at nearly every level. A return to form "While I am really proud that so many people have played the games and like the series, at the same time I also feel with each game we had a lot of points to reflect on," Takahashi says of the series thus far. "With Bravely Second: End Layer, we received a lot of comments mainly … [Read more...] about The making of Bravely Default 2, a return to form built on demos, mistakes, and Octopath Traveler
Evercade is a promising product with teething issues
Update: we've now completed a full Evercade review if you'd like an in-depth report of the game after testing it out for longer. And if you'd like to check out similar retro throwbacks to gaming's classic years, be sure to take a look at our guide to the best retro consoles . While the recent wave of mini consoles has been a good thing overall, it’s easy to understand why they don’t scratch the itch for everyone. With their fixed software line-ups, the fun inevitably has a limit. What’s more, they can’t offer one important part of the fun of retro gaming – building a collection. Blaze has attempted to fulfil that need with the Evercade, a dedicated retro gaming handheld that runs bespoke compilation cartridges. But does it represent a good way to play these games? Key Details Released : Out Now Price : From £59.99 Publisher : Blaze Players : 1 The device itself is relatively basic, in order to keep costs down. An internal battery supplies 4-5 … [Read more...] about Evercade is a promising product with teething issues
Bravely Default 2 review – a heady serving of nostalgia, and a theorycrafter’s dream
Square Enix's line of retro JRPGs continues with an all-new world and tale for Bravely Default, though some of the old problems persist. Sometimes, there's nothing quite so reassuring as a good old JRPG. This is a comfort blanket of a genre for players of a certain age, games that happily consume entire lazy afternoons curled up on a sofa as you slowly push numbers ever upwards. They don't come much more comforting than those producer Tomoya Asano and his team have made an art of in recent years; dipping into Square Enix's remarkable history of evocative greats, they've given us modern takes on the classic JRPG formula such as 2018's Octopath Traveler and 2012's Bravely Default. Such was the success of the original Bravely Default that it saw a small number of follow-ups, though this being the convoluted world of JRPG titling it's only now we're getting a Bravely Default 2 - that number denoting a clean break from prior games in the same way that each new Final Fantasy … [Read more...] about Bravely Default 2 review – a heady serving of nostalgia, and a theorycrafter’s dream
What Treyarch learned from Blackout to build its Outbreak Zombies mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season 2
Releasing a mode for Black Ops Cold War called Call of Duty: Outbreak in the midst of a pandemic takes some guts, to say the least. But then again, Call of Duty Zombies has always had plenty of guts to offer, regularly spewing the stuff onto players amongst an unholy blend of decayed flesh, coagulated blood, and other various entrails of its undead hordes. But the Outbreak Zombies mode arriving as part of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season 2 promises to raise the scale and scope of Zombies higher than ever before, throwing four players into a huge, open map overrun with the infected. According to Treyarch creative director Corky Lehmkuhl, the seeds for Outbreak Zombies have been germinating at the studio for over a decade. "Whenever a new open world game comes out, we always look at it and go, 'Oh my God, we need to get zombies in something like that,'" he tells GamesRadar+ ahead of season 2 going live this week. "Outbreak is something we've been talking about since … [Read more...] about What Treyarch learned from Blackout to build its Outbreak Zombies mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season 2
