Beautiful difficulty options open out a game of beautiful difficulty. This game casts a spell. A very particular spell. It is hard as they come, punishing, brutal, unforgiving in its challenge. And yet I love it still. It's not just difficult. It has a perspective on difficulty. It makes its sheer level of horribleness first endearing and then thrilling. You know Ghosts 'n Goblins by now. 2D action-platformers with a horror vibe. You know the dark of the series' scrolling night. The creep and shudder of the monsters rising from its graveyards. You are a knight, powerful but also delicate, the merest hit shedding you of your armour and leaving you scampering around in your underwear. It is a gothic world, devils and skeletons, but it's also quietly funny: that underwear, but also huge hands descending from the sky to grab you, and there's something charming and comedic about the fist-pumping, knees-up run of yours, somehow so little of the expressed energy channeled into … [Read more...] about Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection review – hard as ever, but clever with it

How to get the Draugr fang bow in Valheim
Got your eye on Valheim's Draugr fang bow? Not only does this weapon look stylish, it can down enemies swiftly thanks to its superior pierce damage. The last time I played Valheim, my poor Viking spent a solid half-hour running up and down a mountain in nothing but underwear to retrieve his dropped equipment. While he leapt and dodged past packs of angry wolves, a man in a hooded cloak stood and watched. I wonder if he enjoyed the show. Valheim is the latest early-access indie success to hit PC, having just hit over 3 million players on Steam after a scant few weeks of release. The game brings a heady mix of intricate survival mechanics, lo-fi textures blended with beautiful lighting, and a deep fascination with ancient Norse imagery. What Valheim manages to do is create a believable world soaked in myth, drawing on obscure legends to build up its unique environment and mechanics. This reliance on ancient, often misunderstood mythology grants the game a layer of … [Read more...] about Odin, Valhalla, and the real Norse myths behind Valheim’s 3 million player strong success
