A new PlayStation patent appears to detail a literal banana as a PS5 controller. As first noted by GamesIndustry.biz , Sony has recently filed a patent for a new controller device. What's weird about this controller is that it looks exactly like a banana, as you can see in the image from the original patent filing just below. "It would be desirable if a user could use an inexpensive, simple and non-electronic device as a video game peripheral," the description with the original patent filing reads. "The present disclosure seeks to address or at least alleviate some of the above-identified problems." Furthermore, Sony's solution to this problem is a "non-luminous passive object being held by a user," and could be an item like a pen, orange, pencil, or even a banana. The patent filing by Sony is pretty loose, and only references an item like a banana as something that could theoretically be used as a simple controller. Right now, there isn't too much evidence to suggest … [Read more...] about Sony files patent to help you use bananas as PS5 controllers

Microsoft Mesh is humanity’s jaw-dropping hologram future
At the Microsoft Ignite conference, the company's Alex Kipman unveiled a new hologram-based mixed-reality communication platform called Microsoft Mesh. This thing is jaw-dropping. Its most basic purpose is allowing people in different physical locations to join a shared environment, with 3D capture technology creating a hologram of each person therein (a process Microsoft insists on calling 'holoportation'), all running atop the company's cloud platform Azure. There's some forgiveable exagerration at points in the above precis of the Ignite presentation (no, this is not 'teleporting' people), but it showcases the potential for this technology far beyond mere business meetings. A family watching huge shoals of fish on the ocean floor, the software highlighting certain species with information as the father points (yes the world is becoming a video game). Engineers and mechanics messing around with hologrammatic equipment, finger-controlled UI overlays altering the working … [Read more...] about Microsoft Mesh is humanity’s jaw-dropping hologram future
Teardown adds Steam Workshop support so you can grab even more maps to wreck
Teardown, one of the best games of 2020 , now has Steam Workshop support for adding new levels and tools of destruction created by the player community. Teardown entered early access late last year, and I took delight in wreaking calculated havoc through its first stages. The only problem was that developer Tuxedo Labs included a relatively small number of maps in the initial version, which meant revisiting the same locations as you completed the early parts of the story. Honestly, the game felt worth the price of admission just with that first crop of levels , but with the addition of Steam Workshop support the possibilities are now officially endless. Tuxedo Labs says close to 100 mods are already available for the game, and it highlighted four of its favorites in the post announcing the arrival of Teardown's latest version - including a junkyard map and a recreation of Quake 2's beloved railgun. It's now put to the peaceful purpose of knocking down buildings … [Read more...] about Teardown adds Steam Workshop support so you can grab even more maps to wreck
Zack Snyder on why Army of the Dead is his “small movie”
Zack Snyder's a busy man. Not only has the director caused a huge stir online by re-doing Justice League , but he also has a new Netflix movie on the horizon: Army of the Dead, about a group of mercenaries who try to rob a Las Vegas casino during a zombie outbreak. Speaking to Total Film in the new issue of the magazine, Snyder describes his latest gargantuan action blockbuster – which you can see an exclusive image from above – "my small movie". The filmmaker does not mean in scale, though, but in sensibility. "I’ve tried to get at it in a super- intimate, personal way. It’s not made by committee," says Snyder, which should be welcome words following the Justice League farrago. For one, the film goes deep on the complicated relationship between Scott and his daughter Kate, played by Ella Purnell. "It’s definitely a movie that’s incredibly personal and singular." Personal, singular... and an opportunity to get back to brain-bashing basics. Filmed on location in Atlantic … [Read more...] about Zack Snyder on why Army of the Dead is his “small movie”
