Intel ends overclocking warranty plan we all forgot it offered

Intel has ended its Performance Tuning Protection Plan (PTPP) , an extended warranty program that would ensure you always had a backup chip close-by if, for some reason, you overclocked your initial processor to tatters. The PTPP program essentially offered users a one-time out if they happened to kill their processor during overclocking for a relatively small fee. Tweaked the multiplier and can no longer boot your machine? Intel will send you a new chip. But only once. The PTPP program has so fallen to the wayside that we must admit we didn't actually remember existed. I put that down to the fact most modern processors, for a good while now, have been so barely overclockable that the dangers of overclocking have been minimised over the years. A modern chip is already running close to the ragged edge, by design. Intel says that it's ending the program as it is "seeing lower demand for the Performance Tuning Protection Plans" (via Tom's Hardware ). Plans had ranged in … [Read more...] about Intel ends overclocking warranty plan we all forgot it offered

Hogwarts Legacy character customization will offer transgender representation

Hogwarts Legacy will feature support for transgender character customization when it arrives sometime in 2022. According to a new report from Bloomberg , players will be able to customize their character's "voice, body type, and gender placement". They'll get a choice to have a masculine or feminine voice no matter the body choices they make. They will also be given the choice to be known as a witch or wizard, which will affect how they're addressed by other characters in-game, and which dorm they're placed in. The information comes from people "familiar with the game's development", who have asked to remain anonymous, and also arrives in the wake of comments made by Harry Potter creator JK Rowling throughout 2020 that were deemed transphobic. The report states that as a result, "some members of the Hogwarts Legacy development team have fought to make the game as inclusive as possible, pushing for the character customization and even for a transgender character to be … [Read more...] about Hogwarts Legacy character customization will offer transgender representation

All of MSI’s Z490 motherboards are gaining PCIe 4.0 support with Rocket Lake

Intel Rocket Lake is coming into orbit and will touch down at the end of the month, bringing with it improved performance and support for PCI Express 4.0. To take advantage of the latter, you won't necessarily need a new motherboard. MSI, for example, has confirmed that its full stack of Z490 motherboards will be getting PCIe 4.0 support with Intel's 11th Gen Rocket Lake chips. The minor caveat is that you will need to update the BIOS to unlock PCIe 4.0. That's not a big deal if you're aiming to replace your Comet Lake CPU with an 11th Gen Core desktop processor without also upgrading your motherboard, because you would need to update the BIOS anyway. "To be PCIe 4.0 compatible, several components on the motherboards are necessary, including PCIe 4.0 ready clock generator, lane switch, redriver, PCIe slots, and M.2 connectors. Thanks to the complete PCIe 4.0 solutions, MSI Z490 motherboards provide the most stable design for PCIe 4.0 and unlock the full performance of PCIe 4.0 … [Read more...] about All of MSI’s Z490 motherboards are gaining PCIe 4.0 support with Rocket Lake

R-Type Final retrospective

The R-Type series needs little introduction. From its stunning arcade debut in 1987, R-Type captured the hearts and minds of a generation by combining novel mechanics with a distinctive Giger-inspired biomechanical aesthetic. A grand sense of spectacle was matched by a challenge equally imposing, and although reliant on the learn-by-rote methodology that underpinned all shmups of the day, Irem's craftsmanship created a horizontal journey with a unique imagination. 26 years later, R-Type's Force and charge shot still feels like a genius twist on the genre's norms. Bolstered by its uniqueness and wild success, the R-Type concept blossomed into a fine run of sequels. With the 1998 release of R-Type Delta, the series marked its first decade with a bravura entry that demonstrated precisely why true icons are timeless, proving that its template could sing in polygons just as well as it could in bitmaps. However, all good things must come to an end. In a unique and emotionally affecting … [Read more...] about R-Type Final retrospective

Bungie’s Trademark For “BungieCon” Has Resurfaced

A trademark that Bungie originally filed in 2020 is making the rounds again this week, prompting speculation that the Destiny studio may have plans for its own convention. Bungie's trademark for "BungieCon," which was originally filed in summer 2020 , covers all manner of products, including jewellery, trading cards, pants, and boots, along with something more befitting its name. The Goods & Services description states that BungieCon could apply to the "organizing and conducting [of] fan conventions in the fields of video and computer games." The connection people are making here is that Bungie has plans to hold its own fan convention. This potential idea is further bolstered by the news back in 2017 that Bungie had trademarked "DestinyCon." If Bungie is indeed planning a fan convention, that might explain the other Goods & Services descriptions for things like jewellery, trading cards, and clothing. It's not uncommon for those types of things to be sold at a … [Read more...] about Bungie’s Trademark For “BungieCon” Has Resurfaced
