Gamers have a lot to thank Dr. Mark Dean for, and the world’s first 1GHz chip is only the start
Where do you begin when talking with inventor, IBM Fellow, engineer, and professor Dr. Mark Dean? His work on the IBM PC, ISA system bus, and Color Graphics Adapter in the 1980s is surpassed only by the project he led in the early 2000s, breaking the 1GHz clock speed barrier with a chip for the first time. Dr. Mark Dean Dr. Mark Dean earned a BSEE degree from the University of Tennessee in 1979, where he would return as John Fischer Distinguished Professor later in life. He also has an MSEE degree from Florida Atlantic University (1982), and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (1992). The hardest decision in PC gaming today: when to play an Early Access game
Baldur's Gate 3 is right there. I'm looking at it on Steam, hovering my mouse over the buy button, and thinking about the 104 hours I spent playing Divinity: Original Sin 2, easily 2017's game of the year . I'm at the center of the bullseye for Baldur's Gate 3's target audience. But I can't bring myself to play it yet. It's a unique PC gaming paradox in 2021: Playing something you think you'll like now might sour an experience you'll love later. If I play the first part of Baldur's Gate 3 now, in Early Access, will I enjoy it as much? What if bugs or balance issues leech away my enthusiasm? Or what if I finish what's available in Early Access, lose all momentum by the time final release hits, and dread the timesink of starting over from the beginning? I might not even have a choice about starting over—plenty of Early Access games have had to wipe save files, and that's especially heartbreaking in an RPG. Early Access has become a great tool for game developers, but it's also … [Read more...] about The hardest decision in PC gaming today: when to play an Early Access game
“Someone should take a stake to the script” – what the critics thought of Buffy back in 1997
It’s easy to look back and love Buffy the Vampire Slayer now, comfortable in the knowledge that it changed TV forever. But what would you have made of the first episode, Welcome to the Hellmouth, when it first aired in 1997? Well, you’d probably have loved it, because you’re handsome and have excellent taste, but that’s hardly the point. Back then, not all TV critics we so sure. I’ve dug deep into internet history, like a dog-chewed version of Giles researching some obscure demon. Instead of using dusty grimoires and libraries I’ve just used Google and the Wayback Machine, so you can see who got it right, and who got it horribly wrong. Consider this a lesson, Orlando Sentinel. The internet never forgets. NEVER."Plays like an uneasy cross between The X-Files and Clueless"The Variety review isn’t damning, but it reads more like an episode synopsis than an examination of its quality. Perhaps that’s fair enough, since the idea of a … [Read more...] about “Someone should take a stake to the script” – what the critics thought of Buffy back in 1997
