Edge Magazine Presents: Game Changers – Sony invents the PlayStation

What is Edge Presents: Game Changers? Presented by Edge magazine, Game Changers is a new editorial series that dives deeper into pivotal moments from console war history, from the original PlayStation launch in 1994, to Xbox’s billion-dollar red ring of death rescue plan. Each episode recaps the industry at the time (The Background), replays key moments as Edge magazine reported them (The Moment), delivers present-day interviews with those involved (The Inside Story) and considers the event's historical impact (What Happened Next?). A new episode of Game Changers will debut at 5pm GMT / 1pm EDT every day this week. Over the past 26 years, Sony has sold close to 550 million consoles and handhelds under the PlayStation brand name. In context, that’s around 1.7 consoles for every single person living in North America today. The Background: How did the video-game market look before the launch of PlayStation? Ken Kutaragi, the ‘father of the PlayStation’ and former chairman of … [Read more...] about Edge Magazine Presents: Game Changers – Sony invents the PlayStation

Cinema Chain Alamo Drafthouse Files For Chapter 11

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a popular cinema chain headquartered in Austin, Texas, has filed for Chapter 11. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the chain, which also has locations in states including New York, Virginia, and California, has a deal in place to sell its assets to Altamont Capital and Fortress Investment Group--which will allow Alamo to restructure its business and try to weather the storm of the coronavirus's impact on its business. "The transaction will provide the company with much-needed incremental financing to stabilize the business during the pandemic, which has had an unprecedented and outsized impact upon the movie theater and dining industries," a statement from the company said (via the Austin American-Statesman ). "More importantly, it will position Alamo Drafthouse to return to growth and continue executing on its long-term strategic vision." The Alamo was an early adopter of what became an emerging trend last year among movie theaters: … [Read more...] about Cinema Chain Alamo Drafthouse Files For Chapter 11

Wasteland 3 is getting permadeath

Wasteland 3 is getting permadeath as part of a new update coming soon. Patch 1.3.3, titled Death & Taxes, adds permadeath mode as well as an optional difficult skill checks mode, respeccing, new character customisation items, and a raft of improvements and fixes. Wasteland 3's permadeath works as you imagine it should: when activated at a game's start, your characters will die good and proper when their health reaches zero. In a post on Wasteland 3's Steam page , developer inXile said permadeath is a single-player only feature that cannot be enabled in multiplayer. "As much fun as is to watch your friends subjected to painful and horrific video game deaths, co-op splits the team down the middle, and one player losing everyone and then watching for (potentially) hours until the other can make it back to Ranger HQ just isn't a good time," inXile said. Of note: you can't disable permadeath once you've opted in at the start of the game. Normally, when one of your party … [Read more...] about Wasteland 3 is getting permadeath

World Book Day 2021: Eurogamer’s reading recommendations

It's World Book Day! And while we mainly do our work via video games, we're relatively sure that most of the staff can read. Probably? Actually, maybe best not to ask. Still, we know at least some of them can, as we amassed a whole range of recommendations on what the Eurogamer crew is reading outside of work. If you're looking for new reading material and hoping for something superb to bookend your weekends, we've got some advice on where to begin. Or head to the page we put together on Jelly Deals for everything you need to know on how to make the most of World Book Day! Tom Philips: Skyfaring: A Journey with a Pilot I'm now one of those people converted by Chris Donlan into recommending Skyfaring to anyone. Written by veteran British Airways pilot Mark Vanhoenacker, this book offers an experienced, inquisitive and infectiously romantic view of the wonders of flight - and it's one I frequently find myself dipping back into while stuck at home and on the ground. A couple of … [Read more...] about World Book Day 2021: Eurogamer’s reading recommendations

Valheim sails past five million sales

Why, it only feels like two weeks ago that Valheim blew past three million sales . But it actually only took 12 days for the wildly popular survival sandbox to add another two million Vikings to its roster, with the developer today announcing that Valheim has passed the five million player mark. Valheim took us by surprise when it dropped at the start of this year, but has quickly become the biggest thing on Steam. Iron Gate now claims that those millions of players have accumulated over 15,000 years of in-game playtime, while Valheim has been viewed for over 35 million hours on Twitch. While it was hard to tell why this survival game was gaining popularity where so many others failed, our Fraser reckoned much of its success comes from rejecting the chores that have come to define the genre . Both he and Chris L agree that it's extremely clever in trimming away the fat from its survival systems, and is shockingly pretty for a game that only takes up 1GB of disk space. … [Read more...] about Valheim sails past five million sales
