Server issues have always been a bit of a hot topic within the Apex Legends community, with players highlighting problems with lag, code:net errors and - more recently - DDoS attacks on ranked servers . To address all these concerns, Respawn has now published a developer deep dive aiming to "demystify" some of the problems, and explain what the team is doing to address them. You might want to put the kettle on, as this one's a long read. Written by lead engineer Samy "Ricklesauceur" Duc, the blog post notes that Respawn has made some changes to how it tracks server issues. The introduction of a performance display in Season 6 meant players could report their problems more accurately, and Respawn also began tracking key performance metrics for players and servers. In recent seasons, Respawn also used a data science team to systematically analyse performance data. But despite all this, Duc said this approach means Respawn can still be slow to fix problems. "From the moment you … [Read more...] about Respawn discusses Apex Legends server issues in mammoth blog post

Google is promising big things with Stadia , the streaming game service it announced in March, including 4K, 60fps gameplay on just about any hardware that can run the Chrome browser. The quality of your internet access will obviously be a big part of that—you can't reasonably expect it to work well on a slow or unreliable connection, after all. But even with all the pieces in place, Respawn executive producer Drew McCoy doesn't think the system will work out for games like Apex Legends . "We tested a lot of streaming solutions in the last five or six years. For the kinds of games we make, I don't think they're well suited," McCoy said in a recent interview with Game Informer . "We're already fighting TV manufacturers and their image processing that's turned on when they pull it out of the box and everything and that adds like 80 milliseconds of input latency. And just because light moves at the speed of light, and not faster, it's only adding more." Respawn "put an … [Read more...] about Apex Legends isn’t ‘well suited’ for streaming services like Stadia, Respawn producer says
Those looking to get into virtual reality on a relatively cheap budget may consider the Oculus Quest 2, but the "Facebook login required" caveat might be a turnoff. There's a version that doesn't require the social media account. However, that one, Oculus Quest 2 for Business , comes in at $400-$500 more than the base model. That's right: There are two separate SKUs for the Oculus Quest 2. One is for business and another for consumers. The consumer model starts at $299 for 64 GB and $399 for 256 GB. When considering other VR headsets like the HTC Vive and Valve Index, and their convoluted setup processes, the Oculus Quest 2's affordable price and ease-of-use is more enticing. That is, until the "Facebook login required" caveat pops up . This is where the Quest 2 for Business comes in. At $799 for 256 GB (the only one available in this SKU), this version doesn't require a Facebook login despite the hardware looking identical to the consumer model. That's between a 100% and … [Read more...] about Facebook-Free Oculus Quest 2 Is Way More Expensive
The Outriders inventory wipe bug was one of several hugely annoying problems with People Can Fly’s divisive looter shooter at launch, but now, a little over a month later, it looks like affected players will get their stuff back. Not everything will be returned, but most of the gear that counts should be accounted for. In an update on the game’s subreddit it’s confirmed that this gear restoration will affect ‘Group A’ characters, which the studio defines as “those characters who encountered a wipe and are no longer able to login at this point in time.” Basically, all equipped items at the time of the wipe will be restored—no matter their rarity. Meanwhile, all Legendary items in that character’s inventory will be restored. It gets a little more complicated from there: for non-Legendary items in the character’s inventory, 20 items will be restored, with priority on rarity first and date acquired second. That means if you were rocking a handful of Epics and a load of … [Read more...] about Outriders’ inventory wipe restoration is finally rolling out
Epic Games is generating a lot of news lately, mainly due to the ongoing court battle against Apple . And, as a side-effect of that trial, a slew of documents that have recently been revealed shedding a bit more light on how the company operates. For instance, we learned that Epic spent over $11 million on free games in the first nine months of giveaways. The document showed how much Epic paid developers to secure their games as freebies, along with how many new Epic Game Store accounts were created to claim those games. Pretty interesting stuff. I know a lot of people claim Epic Games Store's free games , including many of us here at PC Gamer. But how many of us actually play those games, instead of just logging in to nab them and then completely forgetting about them? I asked our writers if they were actually playing the free games or just banking them for some distant rainy day. You can tell us your own free game habits in the comments below. Jarred Walton: I’ve … [Read more...] about How many free Epic Store games have you actually played?
