Velocity 2X developer FuturLab has posted a candid tweet thread about the difficulties of getting funding for critically-acclaimed game sequels. We all know how it’s supposed to work. You publish a critically-acclaimed game that millions of people play, then you can build on that success by greenlighting an improved sequel. Sadly, that’s not what always happens. Take it from FuturLab, who developed Velocity 2X for PS4 and Vita before it was ported to PC and Xbox One. Velocity 2X is an action-game combining top-down space shooting with Metroidvania action-platforming. Missions begin as your spaceship takes out enemy targets, only to dock with objectives – or enemy bosses – to sow chaos from within. It’s a unique concept that seems fully realized, and looks like a blast to play. And yet, a depressingly candid tweet thread from the studio (thanks Eurogamer) explains that while Velocity 2X established a massive playerbase thanks to a free PS Plus deal, those … [Read more...] about Velocity 2X has millions of PS Plus downloads, but can’t fund a sequel

Don’t go thinking that what I’m about to say comes from any reactionary, moralistic standpoint, crying out for sanitised media. Because it really, really doesn’t. But I think that The Last of Us Part 2 has a violence problem. The first Last of Us used violence incredibly well. While it’s safe to say that the majority of AAA video games revolve around violence, very few elevate its purpose to anything above a mechanical means of interacting with the world. None are obliged to, mind, and to do so would often be wildly inappropriate. But The Last of Us does. It’s probably still the stand-out text when looking for an example of a violent game that’s also about violence. Its approach to bloodshed and killing is fundamental to its quality.Joel’s story is that of a good man turned brutal by the callous acts of a savage world. It’s about the ugliness of a life in which violence is a pre-requisite to survival. Most crucially, it’s also about … [Read more...] about The Last of Us Part 2 is struggling to stand out amid a brutal video game landscape the original inspired
The new AMD Ryzen 2 processors have now launched, bringing us the second-generation Pinnacle Ridge CPUs and bringing Intel a bad case of indigestion. The Ryzen 5 2600X is the deserving sequel to one of our favourite gaming chips of the last twelve months, the Ryzen 5 1600X. How’s that make you feel, Coffee Lake... want some Gaviscon? Check out our pick of the best CPUs for gaming in the face of the second-gen Ryzen launch. When the 1600X first launched we hailed it as the most significant gaming processor that AMD had ever created, and I stand by that. It was a well-priced, powerful multi-threaded CPU, with genuinely competitive gaming performance. It didn’t quite nail the Intel competition on straight in-game frame rate terms, but it was such a good overall package it was almost uncontested as the top gaming CPU until the Core i5 8400 severely undercut it on price. But what it represented was arguably more important. It represented an AMD that was back in the game and … [Read more...] about AMD Ryzen 5 2600X review: a CPU that deserves to be the heart of your next gaming rig
According to the rumour-mills, we may be due another Fable in the world of Albion. A Fable 4, if you will. It’s easy to shrug that off as no big deal. Fable is arguably the series most talked about for what it doesn’t do rather than what it pulls off, not helped by the PT Barnum level overpromises of a certain Mr P. Molyneux. Plant an acorn and watch it grow into a tree, anyone? Not in this game… When you ignore all of that though, and look at Fable as the hack-and-slash RPG that it is rather than the fantasy life simulator it was pitched as, it’s always been a somewhat underrated series with great ideas practically oozing from its pores. Successful? Often not, but if a sequel promises anything, it’s another crack at what could have been great. What does Fable 4 have to draw on? Plenty… For starters, Fable isn’t a series that just rests on its laurels. Each follows the same basic concept, with a largely linear path through the adventure, but … [Read more...] about The lessons Of Fable and what we want from a sequel
