Apparently, author George R.R. Martin was wrong about the name of HBO's officially untitled prequel series set thousands of years before Game of Thrones. In a recent blog post, Martin, who penned the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books on which Game of Thrones is based, let slip the show was called The Long Night. That name comes with a huge number of lore implications for the story. Now he's walked back that reveal in another post, presumably after some pushback from HBO.In the first post, Martin confirmed that Naomi Watts had been cast in the show, which is being run by Kingsman and Kick-Ass writer and producer Jane Goldman and co-created by Martin. He dropped the name of the show, which HBO hadn't revealed, but which corresponds to a major event in Game of Thrones history: specifically, the creation of the White Walkers. Apparently that was a tidbit that HBO wasn't ready to fully confirm.Martin wrote in another post on November 5 that HBO had told him the upcoming series is still … [Read more...] about George RR Martin’s Leaked Game Of Thrones Prequel Name Has Big Story Implications

Did you notice how many of God of War’s big reveals were hiding in plain sight? God of War is a game of many triumphs. It has satisfying combat, and a world big enough to encourage exploration that somehow never overstays its welcome. It’s also a game fond of hiding something worthwhile around every corner, pushing you to scour every cranny if it means spending more time in its gorgeous world. Underlining it all is a coherent story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. God of War’s story is relatively straightforward, even if the game spends time teasing much bigger stakes that don’t ever come into play. But one thing you may not notice in your first playthrough is how so much foreshadowing there is of major plot points. Many voice lines you brush off, and many encounters and quotes you never think twice about end up having more meaning than you initially realise. Make it to the end, and you’re rewarded with context. As I sat back taking the ending in, … [Read more...] about How God of War hides its big story reveals in plain sight
The messaging around loot crates and microtransactions will change drastically. Every publisher knows they have to change the perception on this practice now—I think we'll see a lot of publishers seeing what they can get away with on this front and still getting burnt, and a few getting in front of the potential bad press by saying 'you absolutely don't need them to succeed'. After the firestorm around Battlefront 2, I think they have no choice but to take a look at themselves and revisit how these things are sold, or at least talked about.—Samuel Roberts However there will still be loot crates and microtransactions everywhere. Publishers can try to change the language around loot boxes, but these mechanics are here to stay. If you want to see the endgame for a big-budget game with microtransaction hooks, boot up an EA Sports game.
