Elite Dangerous ' next expansion, Odyssey, is getting ready to touch down on all sorts of new land-based adventures. But beyond making footfall on frontier towns and dusty gunfights, Odyssey is also rebuilding all of the game's existing landmasses—and adding in a whole load of new ones. Generating a galaxy's worth of planets is no easy feat, mind. In an hour-long stream this Friday (handily summarised on Steam ), lead render programmer Dr Kay Ross explained what's changed since the game's first planetside expansion, Horizons. "The system we made for Horizons was good for Horizons," Ross explained. "I'm very proud of what the team did and the results you can get from it. But to look forward to whatever comes next for Odyssey, I wanted a system that was robust enough to handle things without having to do another remake of any of the tech, that's why it's changed and we have all that detail." Elite uses something called a Stellar Forge to generate its stars, planets, and … [Read more...] about Here’s how Frontier rebuilt a galaxy’s worth of planets for Elite Dangerous: Odyssey

What will next-gen games deliver in the future?
Despite everything else that occurred in 2020, the last twelve months were stellar for video games. Be it the surprisingly brilliant Assassin's Creed: Valhalla , the almost offensively pleasant Animal Crossing: New Horizons , or Square finally launching Final Fantasy 7 Remake , a tsunami of brilliant releases swept over us at a time where frankly, we needed them most. The question now then is this: what's next for gaming? 2020 ended on a high note, ushering in the dawn of a new console generation, but what do these odd-looking boxes really mean for gaming’s future? Sitting down with Bloober Team, Sumo Digital, Neon Giant and LKA, these four studios reveal why they find themselves feeling inspired by this shiny new era of gaming hardware, offering a glimpse into the exciting technological advances that we can expect from games in the months and years to come. The first piece of good news is likely an obvious one: what we've seen with the likes of Demon Souls and The … [Read more...] about What will next-gen games deliver in the future?
WandaVision Episode 8: What’s Up With Vision?
WandaVision Episode 8 had a mid-credits scene, much like Episode 7. If you missed it, head back to Disney+ and give it a watch, because we're getting into spoiler territory here. If you've already watched the episode in full, it will come as no surprise: we need to talk about what's going on with Vision. The scene shoots us back to SWORD, in one of their compounds just outside the Hex, where Director Hayward has hunkered down--but we quickly learn he's not just twiddling his thumbs or patiently watching the Westview bubble for activity. No, it turns out that everything we'd been shown about Wanda's break-in at SWORD HQ was fabricated. She did enter the building, and she was looking for Vision, but she left without his corpse. Also, whatever Darcy found by hacking Hayward's files was likely doctored or misinterpreted as well--why would he have been tracking Vibranium within the Hex when he already had Vision's Vibranium parts? It turns out that SWORD had already secretly … [Read more...] about WandaVision Episode 8: What’s Up With Vision?
Industry Insiders Explain Why Video Game Movies Are Getting Better And More Popular
Video game movies have long been seen as cursed , with adaptations usually turning out mediocre at best and terrible at worst . Yet something has shifted in the last few years, with films such as Detective Pikachu and Sonic The Hedgehog proving the formula can work, and studios snapping up adaptation deals at incredible rates. A feature by The Ringer has looked into the phenomenon, tapping a few industry experts to explain how and why the industry interest in games has grown so exponentially. A few projects were singled out as turning points in the reputation of video game adaptations including Sonic The Hedgehog, the 2020 film which overcame a rough start to become one of the top performing video game movies ever . Dmitri Johnson, who co-produced Sonic under his company dj2 Entertainment, was involved in the movie's on-again-off-again production since 2012. He said that "everyone thought it was a joke," during the early phases of production, but that attitudes … [Read more...] about Industry Insiders Explain Why Video Game Movies Are Getting Better And More Popular
Fortnite’s unstoppable crossovers continue with a Batman comic series
Na na na na na na na na na Batman's getting a Fortnite comic book series. This is a not-unsurprising addition to the ever-expanding world of Fortnite crossovers, with DC having been willing to insert the caped crusader in any number of other worlds for many decades: I particularly remember the Batman vs Aliens ones from my youth, which weren't very good, but definitely better than the one where Batman helped the Power Rangers out. And Batman himself has been in Fortnite since late last year . Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point will be a six-issue miniseries releasing in stores and digitally on April 20, 2021, after which subsequent issues will ship... twice monthly, with the final issue on July 6. Needless to say each issue also has a variant cover (I got fooled by those when I was young too, thanks Todd McFarlane), and more interestingly comes with a redeemable code for DC-themed items in Fortnite. The first outfit is Rebirth Harley Quinn, and players who collect all six get an … [Read more...] about Fortnite’s unstoppable crossovers continue with a Batman comic series
