Anthem's launch feels messy. Read Steven's review in progress for detailed thoughts on the game so far—there's an enjoyable core of exploration and combat, here, but the game's issues feel so big that it's hard to envision them all being quickly fixed. Loading screens are clearly the biggest issue, but there's more besides. Below, we decided to list out our problems with the game. For context: Samuel's played ten hours and Tom's played 15 hours, so assume the issues listed here reflect that. It’s worth remembering that persistent shared world games like Destiny and The Division tend to endure painful changes in the opening year or two when they make contact with a large audience. Anthem is strange because it hasn’t launched in a vacuum, and yet it makes mistakes that both Destiny and the Division have corrected during their lifetimes. It's worth saying that a few issues mentioned below are being addressed on the game's official 'Day One'—the 'full' release … [Read more...] about Anthem’s 8 biggest problems so far
Diligent dataminers continue to root out all of Apex Legends' secrets. Along with the possibility of solo and duo modes, it looks like a survival mode could also be on the horizon. ApexDBR discovered references to both survival and team deathmatch modes in Apex Legends' files. At the moment, the game only contains a squad mode and single—albeit massive—map. RealApexLeaks did a bit more digging and uncovered additional details shared with GamingIntel. According to the files, the survival mode will feature an NPC crowd that reacts to players by cheering them on, giving standing ovations and booing. Commentary will accompany the matches, too, judging the performance of the survivors. I find the game stressful enough without an audience, honestly, so I think a few boos and jeers would finally break me.A list of names also appears, apparently not playable characters. They're references to host NPCs, but it's not clear what impact choosing one will have on the match. It … [Read more...] about Apex Legends dataminers uncover a survival mode and hover tanks
Daybreak games have announced another delay to their upcoming title Planetside Arena. In a letter they released last Friday they said that they wanted to bring the release of the game into line with the planned release of the title on PS4, instead of releasing the game on PC first. This is the second time the PlanetSide battle royale title has been delayed, originally planned for a January 2019 release before being pushed back to March and now again delayed until this coming summer. In the letter the company also said: We’ve always envisioned PlanetSide Arena as a way for players to experience the epic gameplay of the PlanetSide universe, through fast-paced, combined arms combat and massive-scale multiplayer modes. We believe that delivering the most polished version of PlanetSide Arena that meets these expectations, … [Read more...] about Planetside Arena Delayed…Again, Pre-Orders Being Refunded

The adventurous pilot, commander “Deluvian Reyes Cruz”, zoomed off the edge of the galactic disc in an attempt to set a new record and become the person who has travelled the furthest distance from Sol. But when he was nearing the point of no return, he sipped too greedily from his fuel tank. 42 days into his journey and he was now stranded, with not enough fuel to make the jump back. On the face of it, Yoshi's Crafted World may not seem like the kind of game we usually cover on Digital Foundry, but there's actually a lot of interesting things happening here from a technical standpoint. Foremost amongst them is that a Nintendo first-party title is coming based on the ubiquitous Unreal Engine 4 middleware. We know that Epic's engine can produce some fantastic visuals, but is it a good match for Nintendo's unique style of presentation, not to mention the 60 frames per second performance typically associated with most first-party Nintendo releases? The answers are pleasantly surprising. In checking out Yoshi's Crafted World, we had access to the playable demo available to all Switch users now - along with an extended version, with additional stages. Following in the footsteps of Nintendo's yarn-themed games also created by developer Good-Feel, Yoshi's Crafted World relies on everyday objects and materials used to build stages, with the new game delivering a presentation … [Read more...] about Yoshi’s Crafted World: an epic yarn for Switch?
