The immensely infectious omicron COVID-19 variant has already taken over delta as the dominant strain in the U.S., with cases rising sharply across the country. But how do the most recent case rates across the Bay Area compare with the highs of the delta surge? San Francisco, the densest Bay Area county, is approaching its delta peak. Its highest seven-day average coronavirus case rate per 100,000 residents during the delta surge was 43.5 in early August, according to data reported by the California Department of Public Health. That number has now reached 36.2, and health officials expect it will continue to climb. The Bay Area topped out at a 36.0 case rate on Aug. 31. California topped out at 38.7 the same day. As of Dec. 21, the entire Bay Area had a seven-day case rate of 20 per 100,000 people, and California's was 25.6. Both are well up from the rates a week earlier, which were 9.8 and 15.8, respectively. A breakdown of each Bay Area county's delta peak compares it with the latest available case rates.
