Ezra Castro is making one small change in his game-day routine. He will show up Sunday morning at New Era Field to join old friends at the Red Pinto Tailgate, a gathering of Buffalo Bills fans whose celebrated pregame ritual – featuring a ketchup shower for founder Ken Johnson – is named for an ancient Ford Pinto that serves as a kind of shrine. Everyone recognizes Castro, even if they often do not know his real identity. He wears a sombrero and a red, white and blue luchador mask, a style inspired by his beloved Mexican pro wrestlers. In costume, he calls himself Pancho Billa, whose grace and humor has given him a measure of national fame. Castro, who works as a mortician in Dallas, intends to be here for his 11th straight home opener.
